Electric brakes: These are the most common type of caravan brake. They are operated by a brake controller in the towing vehicle, which sends an electric current to the caravan’s brakes. The amount of current determines how hard the brakes are applied.

Overrun brakes: These brakes are not as common as electric brakes, but they are still used on some caravans. They work by using the inertia of the caravan to push on the brakes when the towing vehicle slows down.
